Everyone always asks me, “Where did you get the name 'Green Kite'?” It’s a story I love to tell, so here goes.
I’d been struggling with a name for my company. I wanted something fun, creative, unique, and meaningful. An idea would come to me — I’d sit with it for a day or two and decide it was not “the one.” One day I was driving in the car with my husband and 5-year-old son. We were talking about name ideas when a song came on the radio that my son and I love. It’s called “My Green Kite” by Peter Himmelman. We sang the song at the top of our voices like usual and when it was over I jokingly said, “Hey, I could name my company Green Kite Virtual Assistance!” Cute, but no.
The name "Green Kite" would not let me go, so I started to really think about it. I loved that it was a name that had some special meaning behind it (my son) and started to think of what a kite symbolizes (freedom, independence, self-determination, wonder, soaring high). I let it bounce around in my brain for a few more days and started researching some ideas. I found an article that talked about why a kite needs a tail. Basically, a kite needs a tail in order to fly — it balances the kite, makes it more stable in flight, helps it point into the wind and not crash. What a great metaphor for what a VA does for her client! The more I thought about it, the more I loved it. Everything else fell right into place. I knew that it had to be Green Kite Virtual Assistance.
And that's the story.
